I had just wrapped up a long day wandering Tokyo when I first saw this scene — the five-story pagoda of Sensō-ji glowing warm against the night, and the Skytree rising behind it like some futuristic lantern. During the day, this place was absolutely packed. Shoulder-to-shoulder. Tour groups funneling through the gates. The sound of laughter, chatter, temple bells, and street vendors calling out. It was alive in every direction — exhilarating, but chaotic in the way only Tokyo can be.

My hotel was just a five-minute walk away, so I kept coming back. Again and again. Each time with a different intention. To wait for the crowds to thin. To watch the colour of the sky shift. To let the place reveal itself slowly, instead of trying to grab at everything all at once.

One morning, I tried to sneak in just before dawn, thinking I’d have the whole temple grounds to myself. I imagined soft blue light, quiet air, a moment suspended outside of time. But of course, they turn off most of the temple lights at night — the pagoda was nearly dark, and the whole area felt like it was sleeping. I ended up just standing there, hands in my pockets, listening to a city breathing before it wakes.

So I returned later, when evening finally balanced itself just right — the crowds had thinned, the lights were back on, and the Skytree began to glow in shifting bands of colour. There’s this perfect tension here: the ancient and the ultra-modern, separated by time, standing side by side in the same frame. This city has a way of holding both worlds at once and never apologizing for it.

The neighbourhood around Sensō-ji is vibrant, almost playful. Street food stalls, tiny bars tucked into alleys, incense hanging in the air, the hum of voices drifting across the plaza. Even at night, there’s a pulse to it — not overwhelming, just alive. Being there felt like stepping into a place that refuses to end when the sun goes down.

This photograph is my memory of that feeling — of returning again and again, until the moment finally settled into something true. Real travel is like that. Sometimes the image doesn’t come when you try to force it. It arrives when you’re willing to stand still and simply notice what’s already there.
