A Rounded Boulder Below Cliffs and a Distant Lighthouse
A large rounded boulder holds the foreground of this Martha’s Vineyard beach photograph. Its dark cracks and grainy surface stand out against pale sand, while the cliffs rise behind it in irregular slopes and ridges. Above the vegetation, the top of Gay Head Lighthouse appears as a small detail against the sky. I liked how that distant landmark gave the natural forms a quiet sense of place.
The boulder is close enough to show changes across its surface, from smoother curves to deeper lines. Around it, the beach stays comparatively simple, leaving room for the rock’s shape to be clear. Farther back, the cliffs offer a different texture: loose-looking folds, exposed faces and patches of scrub following the uneven ground.
Black and white brings those differences together. The stone is darker and more solid than the sand, while the cliffs sit between them in tone. Light cloud shapes soften the sky above. I find the small scale of the lighthouse especially appealing here. It remains recognisable without taking over the scene, allowing the beach itself to stay at the centre of the photograph.
This coastal image suits a study, living room or cottage where natural texture and a restrained palette feel at home. It offers a Martha’s Vineyard landscape for someone who enjoys the shoreline’s quieter details as much as its landmarks. The foreground rock provides a firm focal point, while the cliffs and lighthouse invite the eye to travel beyond it.
