Afterlife on Ellis Island
Over 12 million immigrants entered the United States through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954, but only if they were deemed healthy enough to enter through the island's massive hospital complex, which opened in 1902. Unfortunately, the vast Ellis Island Hospital was abandoned by the United States government in 1954 and has since been allowed to deteriorate.
French street artist JR and American illustrator Art Spiegelman have teamed to create a photo book that depicts the narrative of life there. In addition, black-and-white archival photographs of Ellis Island's immigrants have been blown up to life-size and pasted onto the hospital's walls, windows, and other surfaces. This project restores the space to its former glory and establishes a sense of time and place, providing historical context for the immigrant experience on Ellis Island.
One of the pieces of artwork created for their project is shown in this fine art urban landscape print. A picture of a pharmacist at work is projected onto the wall behind the century-old window in the deserted chamber. There is also a picture of a pharmacist's shelf with dozens of medicine bottles.
