Ten Hours Inside the Toronto G20 Police Kettling at King and Spadina

ic: Riot police stand behind shields during Toronto’s 2010 G20 protests.

I rode my bike into downtown Toronto with my Leica M9 to photograph the 2010 G20 protests. I wanted to document what was unfolding in the city. Instead, I found myself caught inside the police kettling at King and Spadina.

This photograph is part of my protest photography collection, a record of public events I witnessed with a camera.

I was there as an observer, not a protester. The line of shields in this black-and-white photograph records one part of an experience that kept me at the intersection for ten hours.

Photographing public life can lead well beyond an ordinary walk with a camera. I discuss the practice in What Is Street Photography? and the questions photographers should consider in my article on street photography laws.

My wider Toronto photography collection follows other streets, buildings and moments in the city.
