Heading to Vietnam

And we’re off.

My wife and I are sitting in the airport lounge in Toronto, waiting to begin what will be more than 24 hours of airplanes, airports, connections and probably very little sleep before we finally arrive in Vietnam.

I love travelling. I love arriving. The getting there part, particularly when the other side of the world is involved, I could happily do without.

But there’s something about sitting here with the camera gear packed and knowing that I really have no idea what I’m going to come home with that still excites me. I have places I want to see and things I think I want to photograph, but experience has taught me not to plan the pictures too carefully. The photographs that stay with me are usually the ones I never knew existed until I was standing in front of them.

We’ll be travelling through Vietnam, and I’ll be photographing as much of it as I can—the streets, people, landscapes, architecture and those strange little moments that are impossible to predict from home.

That part I’m looking forward to.

The next 24+ hours?

Not quite as much.
