Two Cuban Men Resting With Cigars And Birdcage
Some photographs happen because everything lines up for a split second. Others happen because the moment unfolds slowly, almost inviting you to step into it. This one felt like the latter. I was walking through the old streets of Trinidad, Cuba, when I noticed these two men sitting on a worn stone step beneath a heavy wooden door. They weren’t posing; they weren’t aware of me in any meaningful way. They were existing in the rhythm of the day.
The man on the left leans forward slightly, his hat pulled down, his attention drifting somewhere toward the ground as he lights a cigar. His posture feels quiet, almost introspective. The man on the right is the opposite. He sits wide and open, a cigar in his mouth, looking straight toward the street with the kind of expression that suggests he has seen a lifetime of stories pass by from that exact spot.
Between them sits a small birdcage resting on the step. It’s one of those subtle details that make the scene feel deeply rooted in place. In many Cuban towns, birdcages are common sights outside homes, part companion and part tradition. Here it quietly anchors the composition, sitting between two men who look as if they’ve shared that same step for years.
What drew me to the scene immediately was the balance. Two figures, similar but completely different in character. Two cigars. Two hats. The aged textures of the wooden doors behind them. The rough plaster wall. The worn stone beneath their feet. All of it is working together to create a moment that feels honest and unfiltered.
I photographed this while wandering the streets of Trinidad during my travels through Cuba. Nothing about it was staged. I paused, observed the scene, and waited until the quiet tension between the two men settled into a frame that felt right.
In black and white, the image leans heavily on texture and expression. The lines in their faces, the grain of the wood, the contrast between light shirts and darker tones behind them—all of it draws the viewer directly toward the human story unfolding before that doorway.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
