Alpaca Window Display In Beijing | Limited Edition of 10
Alpaca Sculpture In Beijing Retail Window Display
I came across this storefront while walking through a traditional retail street in Beijing, where the older tiled architecture still meets modern pop culture in strange and often unexpected ways. What stopped me wasn’t the merchandise or signage at first, but the surreal presence of an alpaca sculpture standing proudly in the centre of the display window, as it belonged there all along. It was surrounded by mannequins wearing graphic T-shirts, novelty perfume signage, cartoon masks, and hanging decor, all competing for attention in a tight visual space.
The alpaca itself has a rough, hand-worked surface texture that catches light unevenly from below, giving it a theatrical, almost stage-like presence. There is a sense of humour throughout the composition, with exaggerated facial features and a stance that feels oddly confrontational yet playful. Behind the glass, reflections of the street and the shop's interior lighting blend, creating layered vertical lines through the subject and pulling the outside world directly into the scene.
Below it, the geometric-patterned floor tiles anchor the entire arrangement with repeating circular forms that contrast with the organic shape of the sculpture’s body. The mannequins on either side remain static and expressionless, while the alpaca appears animated in comparison, as though it might turn its head at any moment. Overhead, the wooden beams and traditional roofing structure provide just enough context to remind me exactly where I am, even as the window display leans heavily into something modern and irreverent.
This photograph was created on location during one of my extended stays in Beijing, where I spent time simply walking the city, looking for unscripted moments that reveal personality in everyday commercial spaces. Each print is personally signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. It is produced with archival pigment inks and paper for long-term stability and tonal consistency.
