This photograph captures the World's Largest Axe monument in Nackawic, New Brunswick—a bold and unmistakable landmark rising from an open riverside park along the Saint John River. The axe dominates the frame, its polished steel blade reflecting light while the long handle slices diagonally through the sky. Rendered in black and white, the image strips the scene down to form, texture, and contrast, allowing the monument's scale and presence to take centre stage.
What immediately draws the eye is the balance between weight and suspension. Despite its massive size, the axe appears almost airborne, anchored at a single point. The textured metal surface becomes a visual anchor of its own, catching highlights and shadows that ripple across the blade. Without colour, those details become more pronounced—the surface patterns, the sharp edge of the steel, and the clean geometry of the form stand out against the open sky and distant tree line.
Nackawic's identity is closely tied to forestry, and this monument is more than a roadside attraction. It stands as a symbol of labour, industry, and the working history that shaped much of New Brunswick—photographing it in black and white moves the image away from novelty and into something more timeless, where the axe reads as both sculpture and statement—rooted firmly in place, yet visually universal.
I photographed this scene on location, standing at the base of the monument and carefully working the angle to emphasise scale and perspective. Being there matters. The sense of size, the way the structure interacts with its surroundings, and the way light moves across the steel can only be understood in person. Each print is created from this original photograph, personally signed by me, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a real, on-location image.
This piece suits spaces that benefit from strong graphic structure and architectural form—offices, studios, modern living spaces, or anywhere that calls for a grounded yet striking focal point. The black-and-white treatment ensures it integrates seamlessly into a wide range of interiors while preserving the subject's seriousness and weight.
