A Winter Road Winding Through Haliburton Village

This image is personal. It’s a piece of where I live and work—Haliburton, Ontario. On some days, I pack up the gear and head out into the unknown. But other times, I stay close to home. This one was taken during one of those quieter days, standing high above the village just as winter had blanketed everything in soft tones of white and grey. The road winding through the trees felt like a brushstroke across a cold canvas.

What drew me to this view wasn’t just the composition, though it’s got that natural serpentine lead-in that photographers always hope for. It was the feeling of stillness. You can almost hear the hush of fresh snow and the low crunch of tires on packed ice. That small-town silence, broken only by the occasional car or a snow shovel scraping a driveway.

Every structure here holds a story. Some of these homes I’ve walked past countless times, some I’ve never set foot in—but I know they’ve seen a hundred winters before this one. There’s a lived-in rhythm to places like Haliburton that you just don’t find in bigger cities. It’s humble, it’s grounded, and it’s remarkably photogenic if you know where to look.

I chose black and white for this image because the scene called for it. The trees, rooftops, and roadlines all fall into a natural rhythm that colour would’ve distracted from. The texture and contrast say more here than any blue sky or red brick ever could.

This print is about finding the extraordinary in the everyday—seeing beauty in places that are often passed over. If you’ve ever driven down a road like this with the heater on and music low, or looked out over a frozen town and felt a calm you couldn’t quite name, you’ll understand what I was after here.

If you’re drawn to the quiet power of winter landscapes and the soul of small towns, I invite you to explore more from my Haliburton Photography Collection.
