Conversations On A Bucharest Bench | Limited Edition of 10
Two Elderly Women Resting Beside Outdoor Cafe Tables
There’s something about watching people pause in the middle of a busy square that always pulls me in. In this scene, two older women sit side by side on a wooden bench, wrapped in long coats and winter hats, positioned just at the edge of an outdoor café terrace. One leans forward slightly, hands folded over her handbag, while the other turns toward her with the faintest suggestion of a smile. Between them, there’s a quiet familiarity that doesn’t need to announce itself.
Behind them, café chairs scatter across the paved square in loose patterns, occupied by strangers who are mid-meal or mid-conversation. The repetition of tabletops and umbrellas builds a soft visual rhythm that frames the stillness of the bench. Their dark shoes rest against worn stone pavers, textured and uneven in tone, catching just enough light to separate surface from shadow. It’s an ordinary moment, but one that feels layered with history — the kind of lived experience that quietly accumulates over decades.
I photographed this while exploring Bucharest on foot, drifting between streets without any real destination in mind. These are the scenes that stop me — not monuments or grand façades, but the everyday exchanges that unfold in public spaces without performance or intention. What you see here existed exactly as it appears, a moment shared between two people who had likely sat together countless times before.
