Elderly Vendor Outside Concrete Church In Winter

I came across this quiet scene while walking through a residential part of Zagreb on a cold afternoon when the streets felt more functional than social. The church itself stood back from the road in that particular mid-century concrete style that seems to hover somewhere between solemn and stark. Tall columns rose from the pavement like unfinished thoughts. Between them, textured glass panels created a geometric grid that caught just enough ambient light to give the structure a muted presence without drawing attention to itself.

It wasn’t the architecture alone that made me stop, though. Off to the left of the main entrance sat an older woman bundled into a winter coat and a knit cap, perched on a small stool beside a modest stack of cardboard boxes. The arrangement wasn’t dramatic or staged in any way. A few small items were laid out for passersby who might care to notice. Most didn’t. The symmetry of the church behind her felt immense, almost institutional, while her presence in the frame was personal and temporary. That tension is what held me there long enough to make the photograph.

I took this image on location while travelling through Zagreb, drawn by the stillness of the moment more than anything else. There was no performance here—just someone enduring the day beneath a structure built for permanence. The cross mounted to the glass wall behind her seemed less symbolic and more structural in that moment, another vertical form echoing the column to its left, anchoring the space without commentary.

Each print is personally signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. Produced using archival pigment inks on museum-grade photographic paper, the tonal range and subtle surface detail are preserved to reflect the quiet complexity of the original scene as it existed that day.
