Abandoned old house in the foothills of Iceland | Limited Edition of 10
Isolated Countryside Home Surrounded By Misty Hills And River
There's a kind of silence in parts of Iceland that doesn't just feel quiet; it feels permanent. I came across this small, weathered farmhouse tucked deep into a rolling river valley, the sort of place that feels forgotten even by the maps that brought me there. The hills stretch outward in muted tones of ochre and green, rising slowly into a fog that never quite lifts. The house sits alone in the centre of it all, its pale walls and faded roof standing in quiet contrast against the vastness that surrounds it.
A shallow river cuts across the foreground, carving its way through volcanic soil and mossy embankments that feel older than anything built by human hands. The terrain here is uneven and fractured, softened only by windblown grass that bends in unison across the fields. Power lines stand off in the distance like afterthoughts, reminders that someone once lived here with purpose. Now, it seems the land has slowly begun to reclaim the structure, inch by inch.
I photographed this on location while travelling through Iceland's remote countryside, where the distances between places often feel longer than they appear. Standing here, with the cold air pressing in and nothing but wind moving across the valley, I was struck by how quietly the landscape holds onto its past. It's not dramatic in a cinematic way; it's steady, grounded, and still.
