Portrait of a Zebra Caught in Serengeti Stillness

I was in northern Tanzania, deep inside the Serengeti, when I met this zebra. It wasn’t a grand migration moment or some adrenaline-pumping predator chase—just stillness. That quiet kind of encounter that sneaks up on you and sticks with you long after you’ve packed up the gear. I had been tracking the light all afternoon, waiting for it to fall just right, when this lone zebra emerged from the grassland—shoulders square, gaze steady. It didn’t flinch. It didn’t bolt. Just stood there and watched me, head turned like it had something to say.

This photograph is about patience and presence. It’s about those brief moments when the animal seems to become the land it walks on—when its patterns echo the light, the terrain, the rhythm of the place itself. There’s something ancient and graphic about a zebra’s stripes in black and white. Even stripped of colour, it pulses with life. You don’t need dramatic movement or deep saturation. The story is in the texture, in the contrast, in the quiet authority of the animal.

I shot this at 600mm to pull the zebra forward and isolate it against the soft Serengeti bokeh—intentionally minimalist, but not sterile. You can still feel the heat shimmering off the plains. There’s dust in the background, a subtle halo around the mane, and if you look closely, you can see the light just brushing the curve of its ear.

This piece speaks to the wild, but not the violent or chaotic wild we often imagine. This is the wild that’s observant. Intelligent. Beautifully composed by nature itself. I’ve kept the tonal range deliberately rich—deep shadows, bright whites, mid-tones that wrap around every muscle. The result is a fine art print that balances strength with grace.

If you’re drawn to art that feels grounded and raw, but also calm and intentional, this one belongs on your wall. I hand-sign each print myself because I want that personal connection to remain. This isn’t just wildlife photography—it’s a portrait of place, of presence, and of a species that wears the landscape like armour.

Limited Edition of 10

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.

Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.

I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.

Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

Premium Archival Fine Art Prints

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.

The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.

Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.

Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide Delivery Included

Every print is personally produced, inspected, signed, numbered, and carefully packaged by me at my studio in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.

Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.

Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
