Wrecked DC-3 on Iceland’s Solheimasandur Black Sand

On Iceland’s Solheimasandur Beach, stripped bare by wind and volcanic sand, sits the wreckage of a U.S. Navy DC-3—broken, skeletal, and oddly still. This wall art print captures the aircraft as it is today: a ghost of metal left in a black desert, open to the elements and whatever meaning people bring with them when they visit.

The fuselage is torn open. Rivets hang loose. The wings are long gone. What’s left is hollow, weathered, and resting quietly against the dark sand. In this image, the composition leans slightly off-centre, allowing the emptiness around the plane to speak just as loudly. The monochrome palette makes the texture even sharper—the pitting in the metal, the streaks from rain, the tonal contrast between wreckage and sky.

This isn’t a dramatic shot. There’s no special lighting, no filters, no tricks. It’s flat and honest—how it looked that day. The strength of this piece is in its restraint. It doesn’t push an emotion—it lets the viewer bring their own. For some, it’s eerie. For others, it’s beautiful.

As wall art, this image brings a stark presence to a space. It fits perfectly in modern, minimalist, or industrial interiors—places where texture, space, and contrast matter. It’s also a natural fit for collectors drawn to aviation history or desolate landscapes.

Like all my work, this is real photography—captured on location, printed by hand in my studio, and signed individually. No AI, no staging. Just the truth of the scene as it stood. This piece is part of my Aircraft Photography Collection, where I document planes not just in flight, but in rest, ruin, and quiet transformation. It also belongs in my broader Abandoned Photography Collection, which explores the overlooked beauty of objects and places long left behind.
