Farmer Guiding Horse And Hay Cart Through Mountain Village
A single horse stands squarely in the middle of a narrow rural road, its breath visible in the cool air as it waits beneath the weight of a full harvest. The cart behind it is piled high with loosely packed hay, fanning outward in every direction like an uneven crown of straw. Each strand seems to catch the light differently, creating an almost sculptural mass that contrasts against the dark harness and worn wooden frame, pulling it forward. Just behind the hay, a farmer rests calmly on the load, watching the road ahead with quiet familiarity.
This scene unfolded in the hills of Bucovina in northern Romania, where traditional farming practices remain a part of daily life rather than a curated experience for visitors. The rolling landscape behind them is scattered with trees and open pasture, stitched together by fences and footpaths that climb toward the ridge in the distance. There’s a kind of order to it all, even in the way the hay is stacked without perfection, balanced by instinct rather than measurement.
I photographed this moment on location while travelling through the region with my wife, stopping more than once as horse-drawn carts passed us quietly on the road. It wasn’t staged, arranged, or requested. Just a real exchange between work and time that still defines life in many parts of rural Eastern Europe.
Each print is produced using archival pigment inks on professional fine art paper, then personally signed by me and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity to confirm its place within this limited edition release. The textures in the horse’s mane, the weathered timber of the cart, and the layered hills beyond are preserved with careful attention to tonal range and detail.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered edition of 10 prints across all available sizes. Each print is individually signed and numbered by the artist on the reverse and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
