Peeling Plaster and Warped Frames in Rural Transylvania

There’s something about a window that’s no longer doing its job that always stops me in my tracks. Maybe it’s because windows are meant to separate inside from out, warmth from cold, safety from exposure—and when they begin to fail, the story of the place tends to follow closely behind. This one, tucked into the side of a rural farmhouse in the Transylvania region of Romania, had long since surrendered that role. The frame had warped just enough that the panes sat awkwardly, leaning like tired shoulders. A makeshift board patched the centre where glass once lived, and the plaster surrounding it had begun to give up in great uneven sheets.

What drew me in wasn’t just the decay, though there was plenty of that—flaking limewash, splintered timber, lath showing through in horizontal ribs—but the improvisation layered on top of it. Old boards propped against the wall, a weathered green bin standing guard below, fragments of rope and scrap wood hanging off either side like forgotten tools from a previous life. This wasn’t an abandoned place in the cinematic sense. It felt paused. Interrupted. As if someone had meant to come back, to fix the sill, to clear the debris, to replace the glass—and never did.

I photographed this while travelling through the Transylvanian countryside, where scenes like this don’t appear as relics but as quiet continuations of working life. There’s no signage, no preservation effort, no plaque to explain what you’re seeing: just age, time, and the slow retreat of maintenance.

Every print is produced with archival pigment inks, personally signed by me, and includes a certificate of authenticity verifying its place within the edition. It’s a way of preserving not just the structure itself, but the moment I encountered it—on location, exactly as it stood.

Museum Quality Fine Art Prints

All prints are produced by the artist using archival pigment inks on professional photographic paper with a subtle luster finish.

This paper offers a balanced surface that enhances tonal depth, preserves fine detail, and reduces glare under typical indoor lighting conditions.

Each print is carefully inspected prior to dispatch to ensure consistency of finish and presentation.

Free Worldwide Delivery

Each print is personally produced, signed, and packaged by me at my studio in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada.

Orders are shipped worldwide via Canada Post at no additional cost. Delivery times may vary based on destination and local customs processing.

During periods of travel for on-location photographic work, dispatch may be delayed until I return to the studio.
