Hand-etched plaster surrounding a medieval timber door

There’s something about old English plaster that holds onto time differently than stone. It dents. It yields. It remembers. In this case, it’s been remembered for a very long time.

What you’re looking at here is a small timber door set into a lime plaster wall that’s been carved into repeatedly by hand over what feels like generations. The surface around the doorway has become a dense patchwork of scratched names, initials, symbols, and half-finished attempts at permanence. Some marks are confident and deeply cut. Others are tentative, as if the person holding the knife or nail changed their mind halfway through. The entire surround reads less like architecture and more like a public record that was never meant to last but somehow did.

The door itself sits recessed within a shallow arched opening, its surface worn smooth in vertical streaks where hands and weather have passed over it countless times. Small circular holes run across the upper portion of the panel, likely remnants of older fittings or repairs. The plaster edge along the arch still holds its shape, but only just. The wall has been used far more than it was ever designed for.

I photographed this on location while exploring one of the older residential districts on the outskirts of London, where buildings like this are still quietly embedded into the rhythm of modern streets. Nothing about it was staged or preserved for show. It simply existed this way, worn down through decades of casual contact and small acts of defiance against smooth surfaces.

Each print is produced using archival pigment inks on museum-quality photographic paper and is personally signed. A certificate of authenticity is included with every edition.

This piece also sits naturally within my ongoing historic door wall art collection.
