Croatia Dubrovnik Saint Ignatius Church Baroque Interior Daytime Black And White Wall Art Photography | Limited Edition of 10

When I walked through Dubrovnik in the quiet of January, most of the old city felt closed and sleeping. Stepping into the Church of St Ignatius of Loyola was a different world—warm light, incense in the air, and this Baroque altar glowing at the far end of the nave. I set up low in the aisle and built this black-and-white photograph around the symmetry of the space, letting the floor tiles and pews draw your eye straight to the altar.

In the foreground, the worn checkerboard stone floor tells you immediately that this is a lived-in church, not a museum. The benches frame the scene on both sides, guiding you inward. At the center sits the richly decorated altar, layered with carved ornament, statues, and garlands. Seasonal Christmas trees stand on either side, adding a touch of everyday life to the grandeur—evidence of a real parish still using this space rather than a frozen historic relic.

Above the altar, the Baroque frescoes and marble columns create a dense tapestry of detail. In black and white, the textures really take over: polished stone, flaking plaster, soft fabric, all held together by the strong verticals of the columns. The IHS cartouche high above the altar anchors the composition and reinforces the church’s Jesuit heritage, while the side paintings and sculpted ornament fill the frame without feeling chaotic. It’s a photograph that rewards slow looking; every time you come back, you notice another figure, pattern, or carved flourish.

I wanted this piece to feel both sacred and grounded. The balanced exposure keeps the highlights in the frescos intact while still revealing the darker corners around the pews, so you get the sense of standing there yourself, letting your eyes adjust to the light. This is precisely how I experienced the space during that winter visit—quiet, contemplative, and full of understated drama rather than spotlighted spectacle.

Like all my photographs, this piece comes from time spent on location—standing in the quiet of a winter morning in Dubrovnik, taking in the character of the space before pressing the shutter. Each print is signed and accompanied by a certificate confirming its authenticity.
