British Columbia Tugboat Nautical Wall Art
There’s something about old tugboats that has always drawn me in. Maybe it’s their stubborn resilience, the way they carry the scars of countless tides and storms, or how their very presence feels like a reminder of working-class grit. This photograph, taken in British Columbia, captures the Gulf Rival—an aging tugboat whose paint has chipped away, whose wood shows years of service, yet whose character is richer because of it. To me, this isn’t just a boat; it’s a living story of maritime history, floating quietly at the edge of the harbour.
I chose to present this image in black and white because colour can sometimes soften the mood, while monochrome digs deep into the textures and details. You can see the flaking paint, the weathered ropes, the rough steel—all etched with honesty. There’s no gloss here, no pretence. Just a vessel that has given its life to the sea. When I look at it, I see strength. I see time worn into metal and wood, but also the dignity that only comes with years of survival.
British Columbia’s coastline is filled with boats like this. Some are still hard at work, guiding barges or hauling loads across choppy waters. Others, like this one, are quietly slipping into memory. Photographing them feels like preserving a piece of heritage before it disappears. I’ve always believed real photography is about bearing witness—capturing what’s actually there, not an imagined version of it. This tugboat stood before me exactly as you see it, proud in its decay.
