When I walk through the Haliburton backcountry after a fresh snowfall, I’m always struck by how quiet the world becomes. The birch stands here have a way of turning that silence into something almost architectural. I photographed this scene on one of those crisp, windless days when the sky settles into a deep winter tone, and every branch seems to ring with clarity.
This image comes from a stretch of forest just outside Haliburton, where the birch grows tall and slender in tightly woven clusters. I’ve always loved how these trees create their own rhythm: straight lines, repeating patterns, and just enough variation in the bark to break the symmetry. In black and white, those contrasts feel even more pronounced. The bright snow, the dark sky, and the vertical sweep of the trunks work together to create a scene that feels both calm and alive.
I spent a fair bit of time studying how the light was moving through the trees that morning. The sun sat low enough to cast long shadows but high enough to illuminate the white bark without blowing it out. That balance is what makes this particular moment worth holding onto. There’s a crispness to the atmosphere here that reminds me why I return to winter photography in Ontario again and again. It’s one of the few seasons where simplicity and complexity coexist so naturally.
What I enjoy most about this photograph is the subtle depth created by the overlapping trees. This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
