Weathered Prairie Barn Beneath Heavy Rolling Storm Clouds

I came across this abandoned farm just outside Hedley in British Columbia, the kind of place you don't plan for but recognize immediately when you see it. The barn sits slightly off centre, leaning just enough to feel uncertain, as if it has been negotiating with gravity for years. The wood has gone soft with time, the roofline uneven, boards missing, everything exposed to the open air. In front, the fence cuts across the frame in a crooked line, collapsing in places, holding its ground in others. Nothing here is staged. It's simply what remains.

What drew me in wasn't just the structure, but the sky above it. Thick, rolling clouds filled the entire scene, pressing down on the land in a way that felt heavy and deliberate. There's tension in that sky. It gives the image weight, turning what could have been a quiet rural scene into something far more dramatic. The contrast between the open prairie and that dense cloud cover creates a mood that's hard to ignore. It feels like a moment just before something changes.

I photographed this on location while traveling through the interior of British Columbia, moving slowly and watching for places like this that still carry a sense of history. This wasn't marked on a map or pointed out by anyone. It was simply there, and I stopped. That's often how these images happen. You see something real, something that hasn't been curated or preserved, and you take the time to work it properly.

In black and white, the textures become the story. Every crack in the wood, every break in the fence, every shift in the clouds stands out with clarity. The absence of colour strips the scene back to its structure and form, letting the place's age come through without distraction. It's not about nostalgia in a romantic sense. It's about honesty—what's left behind, and how it looks now.
