This photograph was made in the Chofu area of Kitakyushu, in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture, where traditional architecture still quietly exists beyond the well-known tourist corridors. The building itself is a kura—an old fire-resistant storehouse constructed with thick plaster walls, heavy wooden doors, and a tiled roof designed to protect valuable goods from humidity and flame. These structures were once essential to port cities like Kitakyushu, where merchants stored rice, silk, and documents that connected Kyushu to the rest of the country through maritime trade.
In black and white, the character of the building becomes purely about form, texture, and time. The smooth plaster walls contrast with the dark timber framing. The small, shuttered openings feel almost defensive, as if the structure were built to endure rather than to invite. The roofline settles into the frame with a quiet weight, its layered tiles catching soft, even light that reveals every subtle surface variation. Nothing is decorative here for its own sake. Every line exists for a reason, shaped by function, climate, and centuries of architectural refinement.
What draws me to places like this is the sense of continuity. Modern Japan moves at extraordinary speed, yet these buildings remain, anchored in craft and restraint. In the Chofu district, the streets are quiet, the scale is human, and the architecture carries the memory of a working port rather than a staged historical set. Standing in front of this kura, you can feel how practical design becomes timeless when it is built with care and intention.
This image is about stillness and endurance. The absence of color allows the structure to speak in tones of light and shadow alone, emphasizing the geometry and the quiet dignity of materials that have weathered decades of seasons. It is not a romanticized ruin, nor a polished museum piece, but a real building that once served a real purpose, now preserved by the simple fact that it was well made.
The photograph was created on location, from direct experience, as I walked through the historic garden and residential areas of Chofu. Each print is produced by me, signed by hand, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a real photographic work, not a reproduction or digital fabrication. Authorship matters, especially when the subject itself is about craft, permanence, and the passage of time.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
