Curious Young Monks In India Temple Doorway | Limited Edition of 10
Five Young Monks Gathering In Shadowed Temple Entrance
There is a particular kind of silence that lives just beyond the threshold of a monastery doorway. Not the absence of sound, but the quiet curiosity of young minds who have noticed something new. In this moment, five novice monks crowd together in the narrow frame of a temple entrance, their shaved heads catching the soft spill of light while their bare feet rest on cool stone worn smooth by decades of quiet footsteps. One steps forward instinctively, bracing himself against the doorframe with both hands, as though crossing from one world into another.
The tonal range here is what pulled me in first. Deep interior shadows wrap around their shoulders while the outer wall holds a pale neutrality that frames their presence without distraction. Their robes fall in heavy folds, textured and imperfect, revealing small creases, smudges, and marks that speak to daily life rather than ceremony. Each expression is different. One looks directly toward me with quiet confidence. Another peer from behind, cautious but intrigued. A third offers the hint of a smile that breaks the stillness in a way no movement could.
I photographed this on location while travelling through India, moving slowly between temple grounds and village streets where daily rhythms feel timeless. Encounters like this are never staged. They unfold naturally in shared moments of curiosity, where presence becomes permission, and observation turns into connection.
Each print is produced using archival pigment inks on museum-grade photographic paper, personally signed on the reverse, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. What you are seeing here is exactly what existed in front of me in that doorway, a lived moment that passed as quickly as it appeared.
