Circular Roadside Sign Beside Deserted Route 66 Building

There’s a particular stillness that settles in when you step out of the van along a forgotten stretch of Route 66 and realise that whatever once happened here has long since moved on. In this scene, a collapsing wooden structure sits quietly beneath the open desert sky, its roof peeled back in sections as though time itself had reached down and started prying things apart board by board. A weathered circular roadside sign hangs beside it, suspended from a leaning post, its meaning now erased but its presence impossible to ignore.

The building feels caught somewhere between use and abandonment. Window frames stare out into the sand with nothing behind them. A sagging porch and faded exterior speak to decades of wind and sun slowly stripping away whatever identity the place once held. Out back, a twisted tree clings to the earth in the same way the structure does, both refusing to fully disappear even as the desert continues its quiet work of reclamation.

I photographed this on location while travelling through Arizona along Route 66, pulling over because something about that hanging sign didn’t sit right in the best possible way. It’s not centred, not aligned with the structure, not even truly functional anymore, and yet it becomes the anchor for everything else in the frame. The desert light at the time had that sharp, dry clarity that only seems to exist in wide open places where there’s nowhere for shadows to hide.

Printed with archival pigment inks on museum-quality paper, each piece is personally signed on the reverse and includes a certificate of authenticity. It’s a way of preserving not just the image, but the experience of finding places like this still standing in the margins of a road that once meant everything.
