Standing in the nave of St Mary the Virgin Church in Battle, East Sussex, the first sensation is scale—quiet, measured, and deeply grounded in time. This is not a space that overwhelms through ornament alone. It commands attention through proportion, rhythm, and the slow authority of stone and timber that has witnessed centuries of worship, conflict, and continuity. The pointed arches rise in steady cadence along the aisles, guiding the eye forward toward the stained-glass window at the chancel, where soft light filters inward and settles across the worn floor.
The wooden roof structure forms a dark, protective canopy overhead, its beams repeating in perfect symmetry, drawing the viewer down the central aisle like a visual procession. The pews, aligned with monastic discipline, create a corridor of stillness. In black and white, the textures become the story—the grain of the timber, the smooth polish of centuries of footsteps on stone, the subtle tonal shifts in the Gothic arches that frame each bay. Light enters quietly, not in spectacle, but in restraint, allowing shadow to define form and volume with architectural precision.
Battle itself is inseparable from its history, anchored forever to the events of 1066. While the abbey often claims the spotlight, this parish church carries its own presence, serving the community for generations while standing just beyond the grounds of one of England’s most pivotal sites. The church’s interior reflects that layered past—neither lavish nor sparse, but balanced, functional, and deeply rooted in medieval tradition. Every surface carries the evidence of time, not as decay, but as accumulated meaning.
Photographing spaces like this is less about capturing grandeur and more about honoring atmosphere. The stillness inside ancient churches has a particular weight, one shaped by countless moments of silence, prayer, and reflection. In monochrome, the scene becomes timeless. The absence of color strips the image down to structure and light, revealing the geometry and spiritual calm that define sacred architecture across centuries.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
