Black and White Mountain Photography from Banff

There’s a kind of silence in the mountains that’s hard to describe—clean, still, honest. I shot this while hiking the Plain of the Six Glaciers trail in Banff. It was one of those rare moments when the light, the clouds, and the landscape all held still just long enough to get it right. The sun broke through, catching the snow-dusted peak, and the valley below lit up in quiet contrast. Everything about it felt monumental, but not loud. Just… present.

This piece isn’t a fantasy. It’s not composited or AI-invented. It’s real—captured on location, waiting for the light, working with the weather, and letting the terrain speak for itself. That’s what I look for when I’m out in the wild. No shortcuts, no fakery—just the patience to get what’s actually there. Later, back in the studio, I processed it in black and white because that’s how it felt to me in the moment: stripped back, raw, timeless.

I’ve always loved how monochrome reveals a different kind of structure. Without colour competing for attention, you start to notice tone, texture, and weight. Look at the slope lines in the valley, the layered ridges on the mountain face, the soft gradients in the sky—they all come forward in the absence of distraction. It’s one of the reasons black and white is at the heart of my work.

This image holds up well. The detail in the rock and trees pulls you in, but the scale of the scene keeps you at a distance, too. It’s contemplative. It gives you space. I see it less as decoration and more as a window—one that quietly changes the feel of a room.

If you’re drawn to that kind of energy—the grounded, unpolished kind—you’ll probably want to explore more of my work from this area. Here’s a selection from Alberta, and this collection dives into mountain scenes from all over the world. Same philosophy, different elevations.
