Stripes Follow the Face Beneath an Upright Mane
I had been following the afternoon light in the Serengeti when this zebra emerged from the grassland and paused. The encounter was quiet, giving me time to make a close black and white portrait in northern Tanzania. Its head is turned across the frame, with upright ears and a sharply defined mane against the softer ground behind it.
I wanted the zebra to remain the clear subject without losing all sense of its surroundings. The distant landscape stays blurred, leaving an uneven background of pale and darker tones. Against that softness, the stripes become especially distinct. They run down the neck in long bands, then change direction around the eye, cheek and muzzle.
The closer I look, the less uniform that pattern seems. Some stripes are narrow and close together, while others curve into broader shapes across the face. The mane adds a different texture along the neck, with its short hairs catching the light. The eye and dark muzzle give the portrait small, solid points among all those moving lines.
Patience was the useful part of this photograph. I did not need a dramatic action to make the animal hold my attention. The pause, the angle of the head and the light were enough. For me, the picture keeps both the recognizable form of a zebra and the graphic detail of its coat, with the Serengeti still present in the quiet space around it.
