A Steady Gaze From The Romanian Mountains

I photographed this young boy while spending time with a rural Romanian family living in the mountains. What immediately held my attention was his direct gaze. He looks straight through the camera with a seriousness that seems almost at odds with his age, giving the portrait a quiet intensity without needing a smile, gesture, or staged expression.

He is wearing authentic handmade Romanian clothing belonging to the rural family, along with a broad dark hat that creates a strong graphic shape across the upper part of the photograph. I have always been drawn to people whose clothing, surroundings, and expressions reveal something about where they live. That connection between person and place is central to much of my Romanian wall art photography, and here it is carried almost entirely by the boy himself.

The antlers are what make the composition particularly unusual. One rises through the center of the frame beside his face, while another enters diagonally from the lower right. Rather than being background decoration, they become part of the portrait's structure, surrounding the boy and creating depth between him and the rustic wooden interior behind him. His pale face, dark hat, patterned clothing, textured antlers, and weathered wood all separate naturally in black and white.

I kept the monochrome treatment restrained because the photograph already contains so much texture. The fine pattern of the handmade clothing, the rough surfaces of the antlers, the grain of the wood, and the smoothness of the child's face each contribute something different. Most important, none of them takes attention away from his eyes.

This photograph is offered as a limited edition of only 10 prints. I personally sign each print and include a certificate of authenticity. The photograph is produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper for a carefully made fine art print intended for long-term display.

I see this portrait working particularly well for collectors drawn to documentary portraiture, traditional cultures, rural life, and black-and-white photography. Its restrained tones also suit contemporary, rustic, and minimal interiors where the expression and strong graphic composition can carry the image without relying on color. For collectors particularly interested in the human presence within my work, this photograph also belongs naturally among my people photography wall art.

Limited Edition of 10

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.

Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.

I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.

Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

Premium Archival Fine Art Prints

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.

The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.

Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.

Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.
