A Serious Gaze From A Young Face
What stays with me in this black-and-white portrait is the expression. I photographed this young girl in Coonoor, India, and there is nothing theatrical about the way she looks into the camera. Her gaze is direct, subdued, and remarkably serious for someone so young. I noticed that quality again and again while photographing people in India—expressions that often seemed quieter and more restrained than I expected, sometimes carrying a maturity that felt well beyond the person's years.
Here, her eyes hold the photograph together. The small hair clip, earrings, necklace, patterned clothing, and neatly arranged hair give me details to discover, but they never take control away from her face. Behind her, the environment falls quickly out of focus. Shelves and indistinct objects suggest the everyday surroundings of Coonoor without explaining everything, leaving enough context to place her within a real setting rather than isolating her as a formal studio portrait.
That balance is what draws me to this kind of people photography wall art. I want the photograph to remain about the individual first, but I also want traces of the place around them. The rough wall beside her and the blurred interior receding into the background create that separation naturally. Nothing needed to be added. The moment already had its own structure.
Converting the photograph to black and white concentrates even more attention on her eyes, skin, hair, and expression. Without color competing for attention, the tonal contrast between her face, white clothing, dark hair, and shadowed background becomes part of the portrait itself. The horizontal composition also gives the setting enough room to breathe, rather than reducing the photograph to a tightly cropped face.
I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed by me, produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
I see this working particularly well for collectors drawn to human-centered photography, black-and-white portraiture, India, and photographs that reveal more through restraint than spectacle. It also belongs naturally within my broader street portrait photography collection.

Limited Edition of 10
This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.
Premium Archival Fine Art Prints
I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.
