Chicago’s Illuminated Clock Tower Against the Dark Sky
The clock face gives the illuminated building a clear point of focus high above the riverfront. I photographed Chicago’s Wrigley Building at night in 2011, using black and white to separate its pale facade from the dark sky. The view brings the tower, repeating windows and lower waterfront into one vertical composition.
What interests me is the balance between ornament and scale. The tower has a distinct shape above the broader building, while rows of windows create a steady pattern below it. A taller modern structure rises behind the clock, adding another layer without taking away its prominence. The contrast lets the Wrigley Building remain the centre of attention within a larger city.
The nighttime lighting reveals different levels of detail. Upper architectural features catch a bright glow, windows form smaller dark marks across the facade, and street-level lights gather near the bottom. I like how the monochrome treatment connects those separate areas while keeping their brightness distinct.
Standing along the Chicago River after dark, I was drawn to the building’s composed presence. This photograph holds that view through light and structure rather than a busy panorama of the entire skyline. As wall art, it can appeal to someone connected to Chicago or interested in landmark architecture and night photography. Its black and white palette offers a strong but restrained focal point, with the clock tower giving the eye a place to return after exploring the many windows below.
