Indian Woman in a Shop Black and White Portrait Photography
A Direct Gaze and a Hand Resting Near Her Scarf
Her hand rests beside the edge of her headscarf as she looks directly toward me. This black and white portrait was made inside a small shop in India in 2010. The close view brings her face forward, while the dark wooden interior gives the gesture a simple, grounded setting.
I was spending the day walking through local streets and small businesses when I made the photograph. The moment was unarranged, and I wanted to keep the ease of her posture within the frame. The raised arm forms a broad diagonal, giving the portrait movement without shifting attention away from her eyes.
The scarf and floral clothing introduce patterns around the more finely textured face. One side of the background is softly lit, while the wood behind her is darker and more definite. In monochrome, those differences create a clear separation between the woman and her surroundings. The small bracelet remains part of the gesture rather than becoming a subject of its own.
What I value here is the directness of the encounter. She meets the camera without a formal pose or a broad smile, and the photograph allows that expression to remain open to the viewer. Its strength comes from the relationship between gaze, hand and setting. In a study, hallway or quiet living space, it offers a human presence that reads clearly from a distance and grows more detailed up close.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
