Florida Gulf Coast Utility Poles and Reflections Black and White Photography

Calm Morning Water With a Receding Line of Poles

The utility poles are what first held my attention here. Stretching across calm water along Florida’s Gulf Coast, they introduce a delicate, unexpected line into a landscape of open sky and low shoreline. I photographed this scene in 2007, on a quiet morning when the reflections and the spacing of those ordinary structures gave the coast an unusual character. Looking longer brought the small relationships between them into focus.

A dark band of trees crosses the middle distance, while the poles stand apart from it at different intervals. Thin wires dip between them. Beneath each upright, a reflection extends into the pale water, carrying the geometry downward and giving the scene a gentle sense of balance. The closest pole has the strongest presence; the others diminish toward the right, drawing the eye across the photograph. Small ripples soften the reflections and keep the surface from becoming completely uniform.

I chose black and white to give emphasis to shapes, open space and the subtle separation of water and sky. The broad pale areas allow the fine lines to remain prominent, while the low shoreline anchors the composition. I enjoy finding visually distinctive arrangements in places that might otherwise be passed by. This coastal photograph offers that kind of quiet discovery: a familiar piece of human infrastructure, reflected in Gulf water, becoming the central feature of a restrained Florida landscape.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
