Modern Waterfront Architecture Rising Above Oslo Norway
I photographed this modern waterfront building in Oslo, Norway, looking almost straight upward from beneath the structure. From that low position, the architecture becomes less about the building as a whole and more about geometry—concrete columns, repeating balconies, glass, sharp corners and strong lines climbing into the sky.
That perspective is what made me stop.
Rather than photographing the building conventionally from across the street, I wanted to get close enough that its scale became part of the composition. The massive concrete supports dominate the lower portion of the photograph, while the corner of the building rises diagonally overhead. The farther the eye travels upward, the more the structure seems to narrow into the clouds.
Black and white felt particularly suited to this scene. Without color competing for attention, the photograph becomes almost graphic. Light and shadow define the concrete surfaces, dark windows break up the facade, and the repeating balconies create a rhythm along the edge of the building.
I also like what the sky contributes. The scattered clouds prevent the background from becoming empty and give the architecture something softer to push against. There is a tension between those two elements—the rigid precision of a modern building and the constantly changing sky behind it.
Architecture interests me most when I can find a viewpoint that changes how we normally experience a familiar structure. Standing beneath this building on Oslo's waterfront, I wasn't trying to document it as an architectural record. I was looking for the lines, scale and perspective that turned the building into something more abstract and visually unexpected.
