The Derry Girls mural covers a building wall in this black and white street photograph from Derry, Northern Ireland. The figures wear school uniforms and show noticeably different expressions, while railings, paving, and a low stone wall remain visible in front. The composition presents the mural as part of a city space rather than isolating it from its surroundings.
I made this photograph while walking through Derry in 2019. The mural’s scale was striking, but I also wanted to keep the foreground that established how it sits within the street. Curved lines in the paving and railings guide the eye across the lower part of the scene, contrasting with the row of faces above.
The central portrait provides a clear focal point, while the other figures carry attention toward either side. Their differing gazes and facial expressions create variety within the shared scale and clothing. Small plants along the wall add another layer between the painted image and the open space ahead.
In monochrome, the portraits and the surrounding architecture share one tonal range, making the photograph feel cohesive without removing their differences. I find that relationship between artwork and place more interesting than a close reproduction of the mural alone. As a Derry street photography print, the image offers a recognizable urban subject with its physical setting, strong faces, and curved foreground all contributing to the view.
