Traffic Light Trails Lead Toward Rome’s Illuminated Arches
Bright traffic trails lead toward the illuminated Colosseum in this black and white night photograph of Rome, Italy. The road sweeps in from the foreground, while the arena’s arches glow beneath a dark sky. The image brings a familiar historic building together with the moving lights of the present-day city.
I am drawn to the contrast between those two subjects. The Colosseum remains a solid, layered form in the distance, with individual openings clearly visible. The traffic becomes long bands of light, carrying the eye toward it without retaining the shape of each passing vehicle. One part of the photograph feels still; the other carries movement through the frame.
Dark trees and foreground foliage give the scene its boundaries. Small streetlights add bright points along the road, and the curved route makes the approach to the building more engaging than a straight line would. The quieter area at the left also gives the moving lights room to stand out.
I photographed this view in 2010, keeping the road within the composition rather than isolating the landmark. For me, that relationship is what gives the image its character. Monochrome emphasizes the arches, the sweep of the traffic, and the separation of light from shadow. As a Rome photography print, it offers a city at night seen through both its architecture and its ongoing movement.
