Dark Trees and Long Reflections Divide Warm Water and Blue Sky
A line of cypress trees stands in silhouette across Caddo Lake as golden light gathers near the horizon. The upper sky shifts into cooler blue, while the lake carries the warm glow beneath the trees. This colour photograph uses an open view, with plenty of smooth water around the dark trunks and their long reflections.
I wanted to hold the relationship between the evening colour and the tree shapes. Each cypress has a different outline: some are tall and full, others narrower or more uneven at the crown. Against the brighter sky, those differences are easy to read without needing close detail in the bark.
The central group has the greatest height, giving the composition a clear point of weight. Smaller trees spread out on both sides, and the low distant shore provides a thin horizontal connection between them. I like how that arrangement feels balanced while remaining irregular.
The water repeats the silhouettes more softly. Their reflections stretch downward, blurring the smaller branches into long dark bands. Warm orange near the horizon gradually gives way to cooler grey-blue toward the foreground, echoing the colour shift in the sky above.
There is a spacious quality to this part of the lake. The trees remain the subject, but the areas between them matter just as much. The photograph brings together a distinct cypress skyline, quiet reflective water, and the changing colour of the day’s last light.
