Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow Framed by Pier Boards and Water

A tall wooden sculpture stands at the end of a pier on Sunday Lake in Wakefield, Michigan. I photographed Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow in black and white, placing its carved face and three rising feathers against the cloudy sky. The weathered deck leads toward the stone base, while the lake and opposite shoreline form a calm horizontal band behind the figure.

I encountered the scene during my travels through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Standing on the pier, I waited for the clouds to soften the light so the carving’s texture could remain clear. The view from directly in front gave me a strong arrangement: the sculpture at the centre, the curved railings behind it, and a globe lamp on either side. I kept plenty of decking in the foreground because the repeated boards draw the eye forward and give the tall figure a firm place within the photograph.

The sculpture is a work by Peter Wolf Toth, part of his Trail of the Whispering Giants. In this image, I am drawn to the differences between its carved surface, the stones around its base, and the worn boards beneath it. Monochrome makes those textures easy to follow, while the open sky gives the silhouette room. For someone drawn to public sculpture or Michigan lakeside photography, this is a view with both a distinctive subject and a clear sense of its setting. I like how the small, ordinary details of the pier hold the composition together around a figure that first commands all the attention.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
