Carved Wooden Figure Standing Behind Vintage Motorcycle Frame
Every once in a while, I come across something that feels less like a sculpture and more like a presence. Not decorative exactly. Not functional either. Just… there. Watching the yard.
This carved wooden figure stood behind the stripped frame of an old motorcycle in a rural corner outside Salem, Massachusetts. Hat tipped forward, one arm raised in what could be a greeting or a warning, its stance felt oddly deliberate against the softness of the grass and the pale sky behind it. The longer I stood there, the more it stopped feeling like roadside art and began to feel like some silent caretaker of the place.
The geometry is what pulled me in first—the verticality of the carved trunk against the angled lines of the handlebars and fork. Then the texture began to take over. Weathered grain running down the length of the beard. The pitted metal of the headlamp housing. Splintered edges where the arm had been shaped and left unfinished. Even the background sculpture, faintly visible beyond, adds to the sense that this yard has slowly accumulated its own mythology over time.
I photographed this on location while exploring the back roads around Salem, drawn in by how the sky had flattened the light just enough to let the carving stand out against the surrounding foliage. Nothing posed or adjusted—just a quiet alignment between subject and environment that lasted long enough for a single frame.
I personally sign each print and include a certificate of authenticity. It’s produced with archival pigment inks on museum-grade fine art paper to preserve the tactile detail and tonal range of this black-and-white image.
