Layered Vintage Fuel And Soda Signs On Shingle Wall

There’s a certain kind of roadside wall in New England that feels less like architecture and more like a scrapbook someone forgot to close. I came across this one in Maine, its cedar shingles acting as a backdrop for decades of layered signage—Texaco, Exxon, Coke, and a scattering of regional feed and auto placards—each one nailed into place at some different moment in time. No real symmetry. No design plan. Just accumulation.

What drew me in immediately was the way these signs had begun to surrender themselves to the elements. Paint lifting. Edges curling. Surface rust quietly working its way in from the corners. Even the typography feels softened now, as though time has rounded off the sharp edges of corporate identity and left behind something far more human. The shingle wall itself becomes a patchwork of tones in black and white, giving the entire composition a kind of visual weight that only weathered wood can offer.

I photographed this on location while travelling through coastal Maine, and standing there, you could almost feel the years stacked behind it. Each sign once meant something very immediate—fuel, feed, refreshment, direction—but together now they read like memory. The “Wrong Way” sign caught my attention in particular, sitting squarely among all that branding as if it had been trying to say something for years without anyone really listening.

Back in the studio, the black-and-white treatment allowed the textures to take over in a way colour never could. Every crack, every nail hole, every blistered patch of paint becomes part of the piece's visual language. This isn’t nostalgia manufactured for effect—it’s simply what happens when real objects sit out in real weather for long enough.

Each print is produced with archival pigment inks, personally signed by me, and includes a certificate of authenticity verifying its place within the limited edition. It’s a piece that sits comfortably in spaces that value texture, story, and a sense of quiet Americana that hasn’t yet been polished away.
