Allen Candy Company Mural Black and White Pontiac Photography
Ornate Painted Lettering Above an Empty Row of Parking Spaces
In Pontiac, Illinois, I stopped in front of the Allen Candy Company mural and stepped back to give the whole wall space in the frame. This black and white photograph brings its ornate lettering together with the brick surface and empty parking bays below. A narrow band of cloudy sky remains above the building.
The mural has a broad dark background that separates it from the paler brick around it. Large letters curve into decorative flourishes, and an oval illustration occupies the left side. The design is detailed, but the wall keeps its own texture: rows of brick continue through the painted area rather than disappearing beneath it. I wanted that relationship between graphic design and physical surface to stay visible.
The parking lines offer a simpler pattern in the foreground. Their straight edges lead toward the wall, while a low barrier draws a horizontal boundary at its base. With no cars blocking the view, the mural can remain the clear centre of the photograph. I like these encounters in small Route 66 towns, where a short walk can bring me to a wall worth looking at slowly. Here, monochrome connects the elaborate paintwork with the plain geometry around it. The photograph holds both the decorative lettering and the ordinary space in front, allowing the mural to sit within the town rather than become a detached design.
