Chicago Street Art Mural Black and White Photography

Faces and Open Hands Across a Chicago Brick Wall

The mural is impossible to separate from the building. Faces rise across the brickwork, surrounded by flowing shapes and smaller details, while a pair of enormous open hands reaches across the upper part of the wall.

That relationship between artwork and architecture is what caught my attention. I framed the Chicago street scene wide enough to keep the entire corner building visible rather than isolating the mural. Windows, decorative brickwork, the tall chimney, overhead wires, fencing and the empty sidewalk all remain part of the photograph. The mural belongs to this wall and this particular piece of the city.

Black and white changes the way I see it. Without colour, the painted figures begin to merge with the texture of the bricks underneath them. Some faces are immediately obvious; others take longer to discover. The hands above them are different again—large, simple forms hovering over a much denser collection of figures below.

I am drawn to street art because it can completely alter an otherwise ordinary piece of architecture. A blank side wall becomes the reason I stop, look more carefully and eventually make a photograph.

Here, I wanted more than a record of the artwork itself. I wanted the mural within its urban setting, where painted faces, old brick, windows, utility lines and the quiet Chicago street all become part of the same scene.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
