Riveted Steel and Geometric Railings Above Lake Shore Drive
The Lake Shore Drive sign is what gives this photograph its anchor. Around it, almost everything becomes structure—riveted steel, heavy beams, decorative railings and dark spaces layered beneath the bridge in downtown Chicago.
I was drawn to the contrast between the practical engineering and the surprising amount of visual detail. The bridge has to carry enormous loads, yet its railings include carefully repeated geometric patterns that feel almost ornamental beside the massive steel members underneath. Even the sign itself has a strong graphic presence, sitting cleanly against all that complexity.
I framed the photograph tightly because I wanted to remove most of the surrounding city. There is no skyline competing for attention and very little sense of the broader bridge. Instead, the photograph becomes about how the structure is assembled. Beams cross one another, rivets repeat across the surfaces, and layers of steel disappear into deep shadow.
Black and white brings those elements together. The brighter metal edges separate from the darker framework, while the repeating shapes in the railing add another rhythm across the upper part of the image.
Chicago is full of architecture that reveals itself when I stop looking at entire buildings and start paying attention to fragments. Here, a piece of transportation infrastructure becomes its own architectural study—functional, heavily engineered and unexpectedly intricate.
