Small Glass Panes Reveal Vessels Behind A Weathered Frame
I stood in front of this window in Rye for a long time, looking between the glass and the wood around it. The timber frame has a strong, uneven grain, while the small panes divide the view into separate glimpses of the interior. In black and white, those surfaces become the main character of this East Sussex architectural photograph.
The window projects slightly from the wall, giving its lower sill and outer edges their own shadows. Dark structural timbers continue above and below it, crossing pale plaster in a much broader pattern. I like how the small divisions of the glass sit within that larger arrangement without becoming lost in it.
Behind the lower panes, vessels, stems, and a small framed picture add another layer. Some details are clear, while reflections and curtains interrupt others. I kept that mixture in the photograph because the window is both a surface to look at and an opening to look through. The image changes as my attention shifts between those two ways of seeing it.
What drew me here was the modest scale of the subject. It is a close view of one street-facing window rather than a complete building, yet it offers plenty to study. The worn frame, divided glass, and objects beyond it give the photograph a quiet depth. I wanted to preserve that slower experience of looking, with enough of the wall left visible to keep the detail rooted in its setting.
