Bartender Beneath a Ceiling of Foreign Currency
The ceiling was impossible to ignore.
Inside this bar in Trinidad, Cuba, hundreds of foreign bills hang overhead, turning an otherwise small interior into something completely unexpected. I was drawn to the layers immediately—the bartender facing away from me in his cowboy hat, the illuminated drinks cooler, bottles lined across the counter and an old Ford grille mounted against the back wall.
There is a lot happening in the frame, yet the bartender gives everything a centre. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.
Black and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.
What interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.
That is what I wanted to keep. Not a polished nightlife scene, but the strange, crowded atmosphere of a Cuban bar after dark—full of objects, shadows and details that reward a much longer look.
