Slender Sandstone Towers Above Red Earth and Scrub
Totem Pole Rock rises from the red desert of Monument Valley beneath a deep blue sky. Low shrubs and patches of grass spread across the sandy foreground, leading toward the slender sandstone formation and the broader rock walls beyond it. This colour landscape photograph holds both the landmark and the quieter details of the ground around it.
The tallest spire looks especially narrow beside the mass of rock to its right. That difference in shape is what first draws me into the scene. The smaller towers beside it create an uneven rhythm, while the long wall continues toward the edge of the frame in alternating light and deep shadow.
I photographed this view in 2008. Rather than concentrating solely on the distant formation, I included a broad sweep of the desert floor. The pale green plants interrupt the warm red earth, and their shadows add small dark marks. They give the image depth and make the approach to the towers part of the composition.
The open sky provides the simplest area of the photograph, setting off the complicated edges of the sandstone below. For me, the strength of this Monument Valley print comes from the balance between those very different surfaces: smooth blue above, rugged rock in the middle, and scattered growth close at hand. Each contributes to the scale and spaciousness of the view.
