A Slender Spire Among Toronto’s Closely Stacked Building Facades
A dark church spire emerges between layers of Toronto buildings in this tightly framed black and white photograph. I made the image from Liberty Village in 2015, looking towards the downtown core and keeping the frame filled with architecture. There is no open sky to separate the structures; windows, roofs and walls overlap from top to bottom.
The spire gives the eye a clear point of entry. Its narrow, rising shape contrasts with the much wider horizontal bands of the tower to its left. Below it, a brick building adds smaller windows and peaked roof details, while lighter apartment facades occupy the foreground. Each layer brings its own proportions, making the city appear compact without reducing it to one repeated pattern.
I find this close view of Toronto especially rewarding in monochrome. Glass grids, brickwork, pale walls and dark recesses remain distinct through tone and texture. The lack of colour lets me compare the broad stripes of one building with the smaller rectangles of another. Rooftop equipment and balcony rails add finer lines between the larger architectural forms.
What interested me was the way different buildings share the same view. The church spire remains visible, but it is closely surrounded by newer and larger shapes. I kept that relationship as the subject rather than pulling one landmark out of its context. For someone drawn to urban architecture, this vertical photograph offers a dense Toronto composition that reveals more connections as the eye moves through its overlapping facades.
