Toronto Bay Street During G20 | Black and White Photography
A Passing Figure Beneath Columns and Boarded Windows
A man steps through a narrow band of light beneath the heavy columns of Bay Street. Above him, plywood covers a large window, interrupting the formal stone facade. I photographed this downtown Toronto scene on the morning of the last day of the G20 in 2010, while the area was still accessible.
The boarded windows give the image its particular context. Businesses had covered their glass with plywood, leaving an unfamiliar surface within the architecture. Against that temporary barrier, the passing figure makes the scale of the building feel even more imposing.
What caught my eye was the way the light found his face, arms, and forward stride. Most of the facade remains dark. The bright pavement forms a horizontal stage beneath the columns, and the man's movement crosses it in a single, clearly defined gesture.
The atmosphere of that morning rests in these visible details. The plywood gives the building a temporary, improvised character, while the columns retain their formality. I was drawn to the way one passing figure connected those surfaces to everyday street life, bringing a moment of movement into an unusually guarded setting.
The black and white treatment strengthens those relationships: light against shadow, movement against the weight of stone, and ordinary street life against an altered city. It is a small observation from a specific moment in Toronto's history.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
