Curling Leaves Form a Dense Curtain of Browns and Golds
Texture was what first drew me to these drying tobacco leaves. Each one hangs differently: some are broad and folded, others narrow and tightly curled. Together they fill the photograph with a dense arrangement of browns, golds and darker seams. I came across this curing barn while exploring Cuba’s tobacco growing regions, and the leaves immediately interested me as a photographic subject.
I made the image in 2017. The close framing leaves the wider barn outside the picture and concentrates on the hanging leaves themselves. Thin stems appear along the upper edge, while the surfaces below reveal creases, veins and irregular edges. Light catches the raised folds, giving even the darkest sections small variations to explore.
What I like most is the balance between repetition and difference. The leaves all hang vertically, establishing a clear rhythm, yet no two shapes are quite alike. Warm colour holds the scene together. A pale fold may sit beside a deep brown strip, and a small opening can reveal a brighter area behind the row. From farther away, the picture becomes an overall pattern; closer to it, the individual leaves become distinct.
For a wall, this photograph offers the richness of an agricultural detail with the visual appeal of an organic texture. I see it working in a space that welcomes earthy colour and a subject with a connection to craft. The appeal comes from the leaves themselves: their varied shapes, their warm tones and the way ordinary drying tobacco becomes a detailed study of surface and light.
