A Hillside Village of Windows, Rooflines, and Stone
Rows of traditional Tibetan homes spread across a hillside in this architectural photograph. Pale window borders, weathered stone, and dark roof openings form a dense arrangement, with restrained red accents among the buildings. The view takes in the village as a whole, allowing the relationships between neighbouring houses to become the main subject.
I find myself following the rooflines first. They step up the slope at different heights, sometimes overlapping and sometimes leaving a narrow gap. Below them, small windows repeat across the walls, while larger glazed sections and balconies interrupt the pattern. That mix of repetition and variation gives the scene much of its character.
There is a great deal of information within the frame, but the limited colour keeps it from feeling scattered. The hillside above provides a darker backdrop, and the pale trim draws separate buildings together visually. A little foliage near the lower edge softens the otherwise angular composition.
When I photographed these homes in 2015, I was interested in how an individual building changes when seen as part of a group. Here, no single facade commands the whole view. Each contributes a different shape, surface, or opening, and the eye can move from one to another at its own pace. As a village photography print, the image rewards that slow exploration of ordinary architectural detail.
