Four Oversized Characters Among a Collector’s Roadside Treasures
I stopped in Gardner, Illinois, expecting a quick look around before continuing along Route 66. Instead, the owner welcomed my questions and showed me a place built around his own enthusiasm for the road. This black and white photograph captures that personal collection, with four oversized M&M figures standing in front of a long wooden counter.
The figures give the room an unexpected sense of humour. Their rounded bodies and expressive faces sit among shelves, framed photographs, miniature vehicles and familiar highway signs. I like how comfortably they belong in a space assembled from so many different interests. They are a clear focal point, but the background keeps offering smaller things to discover.
At the left, a popcorn machine adds another bold shape. Across the back, the counter’s vertical boards and the repeated cabinet doors make a steadier pattern, echoed by the ceiling above. Monochrome brings those textures and outlines together, allowing the room’s structure to remain visible beneath the abundance of objects.
I made the photograph during my overland journey through Illinois, after hearing about the dedication behind this stop. The arrangement is the owner’s, as I found it. For someone drawn to Route 66, collections or playful roadside interiors, the print offers a view with plenty of personality. What I remember most is being greeted as a curious traveller and discovering how much of one person’s passion could fit into a single room.
